My one nights stay in the Hotel Gambetta in Marseille 26/11/2006

The Motto of the City of Marseille: Actibus immensis urbs fulget Massiliensis. "By her great deeds, Marseille shines in the world".

After leaving "the hotel with no name" I asked for directions to the "Place Alexander Labadie" because I had Madam Botella's name and address written down on a piece of paper I had carried from England as a likely place to stay in Marseille.

I was actually VERY close to Madam Botella's (within a couple of hundred mters) but when I got to her address I did not see her name on the brass plate at her front door - this was totally my fault, as the name was there, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR! Oh well, it was not meant to be and I pressed on walking downhill slightly, which seemed like a good idea with my heavy bag :-) (I'm travelling light, remember?).

Anyway, I burst out of this residential area into the Allees Leon Gambetta, a significant road that leads down through Marseille to join the La Canebière thoroughfare. The first hotel I saw was the Hotel Gambetta - in I went. Following a brief discussion, I had a small, clean room for the night for 27 Euros (18 UK Pounds or 36 US Dollars approx.). This was more like it! I just needed Wireless Internet access and I could see myself being settled here for two weeks - not to be, unfotunately. I got several intermittent signals but nothing reliable and nothing that was a public access network anyway.

So I stayed at the Hotel Gambetta for just one night and in the morning set off again in my quest for an inexpensive hotel and free Wireless Internet access.
